Malaysia’s development is at risk of facing a slowdown, as the country is facing shortage of engineers. From civil to mechanical, different types of engineers are involved in different types of engineering activity. Engineering is basically about applying science to turn natural resources such as water, earth, wood, metal, chalk, petroleum, gas and tin into structures, buildings, machines, products, systems and processes for the benefit of mankind. In its modern form, engineering involves people, money, materials, machines and energy.
There are traditionally four primary engineering disciplines and they are civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and chemical Without the proper attention and due courses, the brain drain problem would continue to haunt and eventually cripple the nation’s hope to becoming a center of technology development.
According to the President of Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Prof Datuk Chuah Hean Tei, the country needs about 200,000 engineers by the year 2020. As it stands, there are only about 60,000 qualified engineers in Malaysia at the moment. Parents are encouraged to instill passion and interest among their children towards the engineering and technology sector so that they would choose engineering as their field of study and career. Apart from competitive remuneration, engineering offers a variety of specialized fields, ranging from mechanical, electrical up to aerospace, biotechnology and micro sciences.
